Here's what's up in Mexican footbal.
Toluca! Became champions of the Mexican Primera Division (first division) after beating Cruz Azul in an exciting final that saw each team win 2-0 on the other's home ground which lead to the final being settled by penalty kicks. IMO, a lame ending to an exciting finals.
Cruz Azul has shown themselves to be one of the best Mexican teams by coming in second place now two tournaments in a row.
Queretaro is the Champion of the Primera Division A (second division of Mexican football)
They will play home and away games against the next champion to determine which team get's promoted to the first division.
Leon (my team) continues to disappoint. It has now been more than six years since they were demoted from the first division, they've won three championships but have always lost the promotion matches. On the bright side, they have signed a new coach and several new world class players. Blah blah blah, let's see what happens.
Eight Mexican teams are currently playing the Interliga tournament in the US. This tournament doubles as an exhibition tournament for US fans and a qualification tournament for the South American club tournament Copa Libertadores.
Basically, the top eight Mexican teams after those that have already qualified for a major international tournament get to play in the Interliga. So unless a team literally lives in the toilet of success (sorry Puebla) they get to at least play in some kind of extra tournament besides the regular season.
All four Mexican teams that entered the North American Champions league are still in the competition as the tournament enters the quarter finals (top eight) The other four remaining teams are, Marathon (Honduras) Montreal Impact (Canada) Islanders (Puerto Rico) and Houston (USA) surprisingly only one US team and no Costa Rican teams have made it through to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile in the World Cup of Clubs, Pachuca (former North American champion) came in fourth place after beating African champions Al Ahly (Egypt) in a spectacular 4-2 win but then losing to the South American representative LDU Quito (Ecuador)and Gamba Osaka (Japan)
Okay, I'll stop now.
