Bush presses Russia not to recognize Georgia regions

http://wiredispatch.com/news/?id=313908
CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - The White House Monday pressed Russia not to recognize Georgia's rebel areas and said Vice President Dick Cheney, an staunch critic of Moscow, would visit the region to show U.S. support for former Soviet states.
I'm inclined to agree with what Bush is saying. But after what the US did to Russian ally Serbia with Kosovo, Bush has nothing whatsover to stand on. Zip, zilch, nada!

This whole situation plays right into Russia's hands like a dry, ironic joke at America's expense with the whole world "getting it".

Reading the Newspaper

I got a free newspaper! They were being handed out at a stop light. I'm not sure if they were given away to advertise or if they were paid for by the city.
I was going to read it and write about some local happenings here on my blog, but the newspaper was instead appropriated to wrap spinach and cilantro for refrigeration.
Too bad.

So, off the top of my head, some things that have been happening in Mexico.

Item 1.
A report reveals that nothing has yet been done in the Guadalajara metro area to prevent the kind of flooding that occured last year, which shut down main roads for hours and even caused some deaths. (rain season started in May)
The president (mayor) of Guadalajara (who's name happens to be Peterson) says it's up to each municipality to carry out its own flood prevention.

Item 2.
A Senator is bringing charges against former president Vicente Fox and the current governor of Oaxaca over protesters killed by police and army during an uprising in 2006.

Item 3.
According to polls a majority of Mexicans
1. approve of the governments actions in fighting orgainzed crime.
and
2. believe the government is losing the fight.

Item 4.
Hundreds of millions of US dollars worth of construction is going into sports stadiums all over Mexico, including new stadiums for football teams in Monterrey, Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Guadalajara, and one in Torreon which includes a shopping mall and hotel.

Well, that's the best I can come up with right now.

Later.

No fair

Here’s a quote that came to mind when I read an article about the war in Gaza, where it seems those pesky Arabs might no longer be so obligingly eviscerated and de-limbed by IDF helicopters.

From the TV character Edmund Blackadder

“I did like it [soldiering] in the old days, back when the prerequisite of a British campaign was that the enemy should under no circumstances carry guns. Even spears made us think twice.... The kind of people we liked to fight were two feet tall and armed with dried grass.... No, when I joined up, I never imagined anything as awful as this war. I had 15 years of military experience, perfecting the art of ordering a pink gin and [mastering the intricacies of propositioning local women in their native tongue], and then, suddenly, a half million Germans hove into view....”

Here’s the news article

Now, there's a crowd that says that Israel should be allowed to do whatever is necessary to defend itself. I partly side with that crowd, as the possition does make sense, but that same sensibility cuts both ways.

From Whence Come Wars?

IF TWO MEN GRAB GUNS TO GET WHAT THEY WANT they're criminals. If a group of them organize and get together and grab guns to get what they want, they're gangsters. But if they're trying to get their political freedom or grab back territory that once belonged to them that some other bunch of gangsters has already conquered, well then they're terrorists. And if they are a pretty good-sized army of so-called terrorists, then they're guerillas.

FINALLY WHEN THEY GET AN ARMY BIG ENOUGH TO CONQUER the territory and grab it back or from somebody else, then it's a legal, sophisticated, self-righteous army.

Shamelessly copied from writing by David Berg

James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Rising food prices?

The price of wheat has been dropping steadily since reaching an historical high a few months ago.
As the price falls you can expect investors and farmers to keep selling for fear of being stuck with an even lower price.
I predict that all this selling will force prices up again once people realize "hey, now there's even less reserves and this years harvest has already been sold".

Just thought I should put that up here. If you buy wheat for any reason (I brew for instance), buy it now. If you're a seller, hold onto it.
